Neal lived with a vibrant spirit, boundless curiosity, and a passion for making the most of every moment.
Remembering Neal
Our beloved son, Neal Peter, lovingly known to us as “Nealu,” was only 13 years old when he passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023, following a tragic accident in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. No parent should ever have to imagine a world without their child, and the loss of Neal has left a space in our hearts that can never be filled. Yet, alongside our profound grief is an overwhelming gratitude that we were blessed to be his parents. Neal brought an extraordinary amount of joy, laughter, energy, and love into our lives and into the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Neal was born on February 2, 2010, in Silver Spring, Maryland, to his loving parents, Rakesh and Bhavana. From the very beginning, Neal had a personality that was impossible to overlook. He was energetic, playful, charismatic, and full of life. And then there was that mega-watt smile—the kind of smile that could light up an entire room and melt his parents' hearts in an instant. To us, he was our little boy, our Nealu, and watching him grow into the remarkable young person he was becoming was one of the greatest joys of our lives.
Neal had a wonderfully curious mind and an enormous appetite for life. He loved cars, soccer, bubble tea, and travel, throwing himself into each of his passions with the same enthusiasm he brought to everything else. Soccer, in particular, became a huge part of his life. As a talented striker, he spent countless hours playing with the Laurel Lions and on the hardtop at Julius West, chasing the ball with determination and never wanting the game to end. He was incredibly proud when his team won the Maryland State Cup, and we were so proud watching him experience that accomplishment. For Neal, soccer wasn't simply a sport—it was something he loved deeply, a place where he could challenge himself, compete, laugh with his friends, and be completely himself.
Neal was also a natural source of laughter. He had an incredible ability to find humor even during difficult moments and could turn a tough day into one filled with smiles. His friends often joked that they got an ab workout just from laughing at his jokes. As his parents, some of our most treasured memories are of hearing his laughter, watching his playful personality come alive, and seeing the happiness he brought to the people around him. Neal had a gift for making people feel good simply by being himself.
At the time of his passing, Neal was preparing to enter 8th grade at Julius West. He was growing into a thoughtful, confident, and wonderfully independent young man, with so much ahead of him. He was curious about the world and eager to experience it. Travel was one of his greatest joys. He loved planning family adventures, discovering new places, trying different foods, and experiencing other cultures. He approached the world with an open mind and an excitement that reminded all of us to stop and appreciate the wonder around us.
Neal's curiosity extended far beyond the places he visited. Greek mythology captured his imagination, and he became fascinated by its ancient heroes, gods, and goddesses. He loved learning their names and stories and would enthusiastically retell their epic adventures to anyone willing to listen. We loved seeing the excitement in his eyes when he talked about them. In some ways, the heroes of Greek mythology reflected something we saw in Neal himself—his courage, determination, and desire to take on every challenge in front of him. He carried that warrior spirit onto the soccer field and into life.
And then there was bubble tea—a simple joy that became part of Neal's everyday adventures with his friends. Coconut was always his favorite, and he took great pride in finding the best bubble tea shops and sharing his recommendations. He loved spending time at Rockville Town Square, where a cup of bubble tea in hand was often accompanied by laughter, conversations, jokes, and plans for whatever adventure came next. Those ordinary afternoons with his best friends have become some of the extraordinary memories we will hold onto forever.
Neal's life was far too short, but it was full of life. He loved deeply, laughed loudly, dreamed boldly, and approached the world with a curiosity that made him want to experience everything. As his parents, we will forever wish we could have had more time—more soccer games to watch, more family trips to take, more bubble teas to share, more jokes to laugh at, and more moments simply being together.
But we will also forever be grateful for the 13 incredible years we were given with our son. Neal taught us that life is meant to be embraced, that laughter can brighten even the hardest days, and that the people we love are our greatest treasures.
Neal will always be our son, our Nealu, and one of the greatest gifts our lives have ever known. His smile, his laughter, his passions, and his beautiful spirit will live on in us and in everyone whose life he touched. Though we cannot walk beside him into the future, we will carry him with us in every step we take. He is, and always will be, deeply loved.
